The 3 rules that beat fancy gear

  1. Window light, never overhead. North-facing window, 9am-11am.
  2. Shoot from 45° for most items, top-down for flat items.
  3. Wipe the crumbs. Always. Twice.

Phone settings

  • Lock exposure (long-press the screen).
  • Use 1x or 2x lens, never digital zoom.
  • Shoot in HEIF (better dynamic range).

Props that cost <$20

  • Linen napkin (Target).
  • Wooden cutting board.
  • Small ramekin of flaky salt or sugar for texture.

Editing in 30 seconds

  1. Brightness +10.
  2. Contrast +5.
  3. Warmth +3.
  4. Crop to 4:5 for Instagram.
